Regulations

The Rules of Golf, jointly ruled by The R&A and the USGA, state in Appendix III that the diameter of a “conforming” golf ball can’t be any smaller than 1.680 inches (42.67 mm), and the load of the ball could not exceed 1.620 ounces (45.93 g). The ball must even have the basic properties of a spherically symmetrical ball, usually which means that the ball itself must be spherical and will need to have a symmetrical association of dimples on its surface.

Additional rules direct gamers and producers to different technical documents published by The R&A and USGA with extra restrictions, similar to radius and depth of dimples, most launch speed from check apparatus (usually defining the coefficient of restitution), and most complete distance when launched from the check tools.

In general, the governing our bodies and their laws seek to provide a relatively level playing subject and maintain the normal type of the sport and its equipment, whereas not completely halting the usage of new know-how in gear design.

Until 1990, it was permissible to use balls of lower than 1.68 inches in diameter in tournaments below the jurisdiction of the R&A, which differed in its ball specs guidelines from these of the USGA.18 This ball was generally called a “British” ball, while the golf ball accredited by the USGA was simply the “American ball”. The smaller diameter gave the player a distance benefit, particularly in excessive winds, as the smaller ball created a equally smaller “wake” behind it.
